Common plumbing issues & quick fixes

Plumbing problems can range from minor annoyances to major emergencies. Before scheduling a service call, try these troubleshooting steps to see if you can resolve the issue yourself.

1. Check for clogged drains. If your sink or shower is draining slowly, it might be due to a clog. Try using a plunger or a drain snake to clear the blockage. For kitchen sinks, avoid pouring grease down the drain, as it can solidify and cause clogs.

2. Inspect for leaks. Leaky faucets or pipes can waste water and increase your utility bills. Check under sinks and around fixtures for any signs of water. Tightening connections or replacing worn-out washers can often fix minor leaks.

3. Test your water pressure. Low water pressure can be caused by mineral buildup in your faucets or showerheads. Remove the aerator or showerhead and soak it in vinegar to dissolve the buildup. If the problem persists, it might be a more serious issue with your pipes.

4. Check your water heater. If you're experiencing cold showers, your water heater might be the culprit. Ensure the thermostat is set correctly and check for any error codes on the unit. If the heater is old or malfunctioning, it might need professional attention.

5. Clear your garbage disposal. If your garbage disposal is jammed or not working, first turn off the power. Then, use an Allen wrench to manually turn the disposal's blades and dislodge any obstructions. Avoid putting fibrous or hard items like bones down the disposal.

6. Inspect your toilet. A running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons of water. Check the flapper valve and the fill valve inside the tank. Replacing these parts is usually an easy and inexpensive fix.

7. Look for sewer line issues. If multiple drains are clogged or you notice a foul smell, you might have a sewer line problem. Tree roots, debris, or pipe damage can cause blockages. This is a job for a professional plumber.

FAQ

A service call is when we send a plumber out to help you figure out what's going on with your plumbing. Once he figures out what the issue is, he'll lay out the repair options and let you decide what route to take. If you want us to do the repair, he'll get to work on it. If you don't want to do the repair, you're only out the $19 service fee. That's a service call.
Absolutely! We repair and replace water heaters of all types, including tankless and traditional models. If your water heater is acting up, give us a call.
Sadly not right now. That said, we have heard good things about Roto-Rooter so you might give them a shot if you need a drain unclogged.
